Data Model

Detailed normalized E-R model consisting of a 3NF normalized set of relations. We generally use Lucid chart for noraml ERDs. However, as we are trying to telework, we need to keep diagrams compact. To do so please follow these instructions to the dot.

1. In LucidChart, choose simplest icon for entity, a rectangle from process diagram symbols, keep font at 10 or 11 for entity name. Click and then handle the entity box at its right bottom corner to minimize/reduce its size. Be sure to add Entity Relationship symbols to your document pallet even if they are not added to the diagram. Draw needed lines, and change the connections on line ends to ERD symbols. This way you can keep the diagram compact.

2. Concurrently, make a list of entities, as shown at the bottom on TAL data pdf. For each entity, include all the column names, underline all PKs, and dotted-underline the FKs. Use Word to make the list. Make sure the names on the list are exactly the same as on the diagram.

Very important: Keep your diagram clutter free, easily comprehensible; and to ensure this move entities around as needed.

See the ample pdf below. Note how the ERD is simplified as just boxes, all the attributes and keys are identified in the tables definitions shown at the bottom of page 1.

You can create ERD with Lucid chart, just use a plain rectangle box from other chart types, drag the corners to make it small, and then use it. Copy and paste for multiple entities. For relationships, use ERD connectors. Make a similar list of table definitions separately with word.

Interaction Model

Entity to process matrices for each area (CRUD Matrix) in Excel. Must include all the computer processes identified in the decomposition. Include few reports in each, if not all reports. IMP:At this stage, if you wish you can make it with just for few entities, say sales related, and get feedback and complete it in the next milestone (Final ERD) for all the three areas. You ERD could change significantly after feedback.

Validation of the model against the identified activities, events, and objects - to ensure that all the needed data is being stored.

Ensure that all the data related to the requirements discussed in Module 3 is stored in your data model design and that corresponding activities related to the life cycle of these entities is included in your activity decomposition chart.
