Question:
David is a student in the entrepreneurship course in one the universities in Fiji. As part of his class project, he is collecting information on the topic entitled, ‘How entrepreneurs in Fiji see their world’. He lined up interviews with three persons whom he feels are entrepreneurial and procured the following information from each.
Interview No.1: “I spend most of time in Suva looking for seed capital for new ventures. I bring together the people who need the money with those who are willing to lend it. My job is sort of that of a broker, but at the same time I see myself as an entrepreneur. I talk to hundreds of bankers and investors every month in an effort to find out what types of ventures they are willing to fund. To me entrepreneurship begins with the finance function. I am the entrepreneurial type that opens the door for others.”
Interview No. 2: “I have had my own business in Fiji for six years. The key to my success can be found in two word: market awareness. I look for ideas and concepts that can be developed and presented in a different fashion. For example, I found out that one of the local high schools in Suva was looking for a catering service to provide lunches to the students. I put together the necessary people and bid on the contract. Lost, but in the process, I learned what catering is all about. As a result, when the local jail put out bids for food service, I was in a good position to win the contract. Sometimes failing at something gives you the experience you need to succeed”.
Interview No. 3: “To me entrepreneurial success is the result of effective planning. In particular, this means formulating a unique approach to operations: unique markets, unique products, unique resources. If you can’t be unique, you won’t win. On the other hand, if you can figure out how to be “one of a kind,” you can’t lose. It’s all result of how you plan.”
