APA Checklist

The APA checklist helped me most in the paragraph development section. By realizing that the first sentence or two is to be the introductory to the body of the paragraph. This also helps by making the paper flow. By focusing on this, I have been able to be less wordy in my writing and it has become easier to complete an informative paper that flows.

Criticism From Instructors

Through criticism, I realize that to avoid plagiarism I need to do more than cite the paragraph at the end. There is a need to cite within the paragraph, so the information does not sound like an opinion and the author gets credit. An instructor previously required four sentences to complete a paragraph, and now I realize why this was a requirement.

Student Success Center

The GCU library has been the most helpful GCU resource for me. It contains everything needed for research and success. Many times the internet will give just an abstract and no access to the full article for research. I found if you do not have access to a full article, you can copy the information, like DOI into the Lope Search and usually gain access to the full article. There is a large list of databases available with search windows for particular topics (Grand Canyon University, (2024). The library staff are knowledgeable and helpful. They guide you through their system to help learn where to find what you're looking for.

APA Suggestions

For those who have entered a discipline switching from MLA to APA, Spaartanburg Community College has an informative website that gives examples and differences between both formats. The most notable and easy to overlook is that APA uses the word References to title their source page and MLA uses the title Works Cited on their source page (Spartanburg Comunity College, n.d.).

Another helpful hint is, if you buy the APA book, I recommend buying the e-book. I bought the spiral bound book and when I needed to look up information, there is no helpful search window that we all use with modern technology. Both research and APA format information are easily accessible through the GCUs portal after signing onto the HALO platform (Grand Canyon University, n.d.).
