Leaders and managers have very different roles in the nursing profession. A manager is a position that is designated within an organized hierarchy and has assigned subordinates. They have formal authority and control within the organization. Managers have a transactional relationship with their employees, and their responsibilities include informing the employee of the functions of and nature of their work, how their work impacts the organization, the training and performance required for their work, and more (Weberg & Mangold, 2023).
Leaders do not necessarily have direct reports or management rank within a system. Instead, their influence is rooted is relationships, interactions, behaviors, and communication. Leaders can be identified by their influential characteristics and the personal relationships their build with their colleagues. Leaders inspire change through motivation and empowerment(Weberg & Mangold, 2023).
As a Relief Team Lead, I resonate deeply with this definition. In my role, I am looked up to by my colleagues and referenced for many questions; however, I do not have the authority of a manager to implement requested changes or provide specific feedback. I find this role to be extremely challenging because I am responsible for working alongside my colleagues in the clinical setting while simultaneously balancing the responsibility of a leader.
One strategy I have found that helps me effectively maintain influence as a leader is to consistently empathize with my colleagues. When they address me with a concern, I first ensure to verbalize that I understand where they are coming from and validate their opinion. I preface with this because I often then have to advise them that I am unable to address their concern without first consulting management. My goal is that, even if management is prevented from implementing their requested change, they feel as though I advocated for them from a position of one of their own. I hope to maintain open communication and trusting relationships with my colleagues this way and therefore maintain the influence of leadership.

Kelly,
Great job identifying the characteristic differences between management and leadership. Empathy is a great quality to have. It is felt by those seeking help and while hard to measure, when it's missing, it's profound. It is not uncommon for a leader to have several managers on the team. What about the department that is smaller and doesn't have managers to help execute the mission? Class, can a good leader also be a good manager at the same time? Reference your response (reference can be greater than 5 years).
