2.Established in 1916, the service now protects approximately 417 national sites, these sites are spread out across the mainland United States, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam.
3.One of the biggest obstacles facing these parks is budget, lack of funding to maintain infrastructure continues to plague many sites.
4.In February of 2016, the park system announced that they held a nearly $12 billion maintenance backlog.
5.In 1964, Congress passed the Land and Water Conservation fund, which funneled money from oil and gas projects towards public land conservation this money, though, has not always been used for its intended purpose.
6.By 1999, in fact, much of it had been completely used, leaving little to none for park maintenance in September 2015, though, a new bill was established to bring money to parks, but it is only temporary.
7.Another issue facing parks today is the impact of the visitors themselves, many unintentionally leave damage and waste behind.
8.With increased awareness and education, though, this problem can drastically improve.
9.At times, also left behind by humans are invasive species of plants and animals.
10.These are species that may have once been pets or part of an illegal trade.
11.Once introduced to the environment, these species can overtake native populations nearly 6,500 non-native species have found their way into the parks.
12.Despite these challenges, though, the national parks continue to encourage people to visit each year they believe introducing people to the beauty of the parks will inspire more awareness and support of the issues they face.
13.It will not be an easy task, however, the National Park Service continues to take many critical steps to protect its natural beauties.
