DSS for Real Time Monitoring Systems

REQUIREMENT / ASSIGNMENT QUESTION:

During monsoon season from end of October to early January, the east coast area of Malaysia

peninsular namely Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang will experienced heavy downpour of rains.

Certain areas which fall below the sea level and nearby rivers will be flooded and requires

immediate evacuation for safety. It is envisioned that when it is raining, a flood monitoring system

will be triggered. This system will collect data from a set of water level readers or sensors situated

around these states usually nearby the rivers, villages, hydroelectric dam and metropolitan areas.

There are about ten thousand sensors placed within 5000 neighbourhoods. Each sensor will be

checked 15 times per second. This sensor will return the readings to a central server, which

generates reports every 15 minutes on the water level. When more than 50% of these sensors in a

particular neighbourhood have indicated that the water level reading is higher than an acceptable

level (red alert level), a local flood warning will be triggered. Several alert text messages (SMS) will

be sent to the respective departments for immediate action.

Task

a) Identify and describe the stimuli that should be processed by the flood monitoring system and

then identify the responses to the stimuli. Justify whether the stimuli are periodic or aperiodic.

b) Design FOUR (4) kinds of reports that can be generated by this system for decision making by

the relevant parties.

c) Suggest possible process architecture framework for this DSS system.

d) Recommend the deployment diagram to show architecture of the system that includes HCI,

application processing and database management
