(i) In June 2020 he expanded his business and purchased a warehouse building for $750,000 which had windows damaged and leaking and the old paintwork peeling. Tim was aware of the damaged and leaking windows and paintwork peeling prior to signing the purchase contract and this factor was considered in the purchase price he paid for the warehouse. Immediately after Tim took possession of the warehouse, he incurred $20,000 on repairing broken windows and repainting the walls (in the same colours as the old paintwork).

(ii) In October 2020 Tim paid $8,000 for replacing an old forklift in the warehouse. The new forklift is exactly the same model as the forklift it replaced, which had broken drive and load wheels. It wascheaper to buy a new forklift than fix the old forklift.

(iii) At the same on suggestion of the forklift supplier, he incurred costs of $1,500 on safety gear and training of forklift operators in the warehouse.

(iv) The warehouse kitchen floor and appliances had been worn out by constant staff use. In January 2021 Tim incurred $20,000 on renovation of the kitchen, installing new gas appliances to replace the old electrical appliances and new flooring material which lasts longer.

(v) At this time, the previously repaired windows started leaking again. He engaged a specialist in window leaks to repair the windows and paid him $5,000.

(vi) Tim paid $20,000 during the income year to one of its competitors under an agreement for that competitor not to compete with Tim in the Otago region for seven years.

(vii) During the year he incurred $1,000 on restaurant vouchers as gift to the staff members on their birthdays.
