Hello Dr. Jorgensen and Classmates, After watching the video by Dr. Laurence Steinberg, Professor of Psychology at Temple University, I found that there were a lot of good and relevant points that stuck out to me. The main point that stuck out to me when Dr. Steinberg was talking about the latest research findings concerning the nature versus nurture debate was the fact that it was not one versus the other but they worked simultaneously. Being in the military, I have seen this play out many times. One example that comes to mind is when I first joined. There was a leader that I knew that had two young troops. Troop A was very outspoken and, for lack of a better word, very bossy when it came to work projects. Troop B was more reserved and soft-spoken when it came to work projects. Troop A was also given the chance to excel by letting them take part in volunteer opportunities and letting them take classes during work hours. Troop B was told that they could not take classes or volunteer because someone had to be at work. When it came time to write the performance reports, Troop A received an above and beyond-average rating while Troop B received an average rating. Both were equally good at being leaders but the favorite, Troop A, was nurtured more into becoming the stellar leader. To sum up, everything that has been stated before, in the nature versus nurture debate, it is really hard to distinguish between the two since how you act or react in a certain situation will be based on how you are treated in that environment. My question to the class is this, is there a time that these two can be separate?
