In Spanish there are two words that mean for. Those are por and para. They are used to describe aspects of movement, time, and action, but in different circumstances. It is grammatically correct to use either por or para in a sentence. However, the meaning of the sentence will be different depending on which of these two prepositions is used.

Below is a brief table that indicates the common uses of por and para. As well as a couple of examples on how to use them in sentences.

Movement: Motion or a general location.

Movement: Destination.

Time: Duration of an action.

Time: Deadline or a specific time in the future.

Action: Reason or motive for an action.

Action: Purpose or goal.
