There are many types of visual management systems which are used as part of lean management techniques, including: 5S-this includes activities that help improve the working environment, such as colour coding and labelling to define storage areas and inventory levels, ensuring that all resources and materials are easily available during the work process. Total productive maintenance (TPM) - these are visual controls that help to make sure that equipment is kept in good order and reduce breakdown and failures. Troubleshooting manuals at each piece of equipment are recommended as part of TPM. Standard work - making sure that every task is performed in the same way to make the process efficient and effective, such as flowcharts, photographs and checklists. Pull production - this is a visual system such as a workflow which shows when products are needed. The aim is to reduce waste, in that products are not manufactured if there is no requirement.
