This assignment will cover the content from Week 9-12. In groups of 4 develop 2 conflict scenarios that are relevant to your field of work. Each group member will take on the role of the following and then switch for the second conflict scenario.
Upset persons (2 group members)
Person attempting to resolve the conflict and de-escalate (2 group members)
Demonstration can be completed live, or you may record the demonstration and present the video in class. Demonstrations for each conflict should be no longer than 5 mins for a total of 10 mins. The presentation of the PPT as well as the facilitated discussion should be 10 minutes. There should also be a 5 min facilitated discussion for a total presentation time of 25 mins, maximum 30 mins.
Groups
This is a group assignment. You will be able to choose your own groups and should be identified to the instructor by the beginning of class Week 10. Mark for the assignment will be a group mark, unless there are concerns raised on the peer review regarding a group members participation.
Rationale
This assignment will evaluate the following Course Learning Outcomes:
CLO4:Communicate with a variety of professionals, clients and suspects in a manner that supports the investigation process while minimizing conflict and supports the de-escalation of the situation.
CLO5: Use appropriate conflict resolution strategies to support the investigation progress.
CLO6:Make use of de-escalation techniques appropriately to effectively respond to emotionally charged or high stakes interactions during the investigative process.
CLO7:Demonstrate the import role of the debrief in high conflict situations as well as the need for repair for effective investigations and working relationships.
Directions
Each demonstration should share the following:
Full Cycle of Conflict
Notable escalation points and then attempts to de-escalate using the tools discussed in class.
Demonstrated ability to resolve the conflict using skills discussed in class.
Demonstration of debrief and repair between all parties; this can either be between those in conflict, or between the two members attempting to complete the de-escalation.
In addition to the demonstration, your group is to develop a PPT slide deck (maximum 6 slides) that identifies the following:
To be shared prior to each demonstration:
overview of the scenario
To be shared following both demonstrations:
Conflict resolution skills that were demonstrated in both scenarios.
De-escalation skills that were demonstrated in both scenarios.
Debrief and repair skills demonstrated in both scenarios.
Each group is to finish their presentation with a prepared question or questions for the audience regarding conflict resolution to facilitate discussion and reflection. Discussion should be at least 5 mins.
