Objective:
The goal of this project is to utilize IEEE Standard 519(Chapters 1-4) to design a Phase-Shift Transformer (PST) whose primary function is to reduce the harmonics generated by the rectifier inside a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD).
VFDs control motor speed by varying the input frequency. The first stage in a VFD typically involves converting AC to DC using a rectifier. Commonly, a simple 6-pulse uncontrolled rectifier is used, which introduces harmonics at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC), directly connected to the power utility. This results in reduced power factor and other power quality issues. To address this, an 18-pulse transformer can be used to mitigate harmonics through angular phase shifting.
