He took a hammer and hit her wife eight times in the head, leaving her to die in her room. Chen, 51, who left China 2 years earlier, claimed a cultural defense. He said a person raised outside the United States should not be fully responsible for conduct that, while illegal in the United States, might be acceptable in the country of origin. Chen killed his wife when she found out about his infidelity. At his trial in New York, his lawyer argued that traditional Chinese notions about the shame of adultery had driven him to violence. At sentencing, the judge agreed.
