Question:
Diagnose organizational challenges and business problems using a research perspective.
Congratulations! The year is 2023, you have successfully completed your VIU MBA. Whoohoo! In fact, you recently started a new job working as a research associate at High Performance 511, a Vancouver-based boutique management consulting firm. You are working with a team of 3 other associates, fellow MBA alumni and professionals. Your team specializes in working with clients in the banking, technology, and alternative energy sectors. Work has been busy for you at High Performance 511, and the managing partners seem to have lots of interesting projects on the go. Your team often receives requests from the managing partners of High Performance for information when they are working with clients and developing new management consulting projects.
Yesterday, Marnie Lu, one of High-Performance 511's managing partners sent an email to your team about a new client, Hootsuite. It seems that Hootsuite is facing challenges with staff turnover, which is impacting its operational efficiencies. Marnie will be pitching a project to Hootsuite's senior management team in just 8 days and wants to impress them with her understanding of labor challenges in the technology sector. In her email, Marnie asked your team to present her with some research on employee engagement and turnover in the Canadian technology sector.
Kodi Smith, one of your teammates, thinks that he has this covered on behalf of your team. Kodi's uncle and his good friend both work for technology companies. His uncle works for NDAX, a crypto-currency organization based out of Calgary, Alberta and his friend works for Benevity, also based in Calgary, Alberta. Kodi offers to chat with his uncle and friend and put some "research" together for Marnie to use in her presentation. Your team has a few projects on the go for other managing partners and timing is tight.
Q1. Do you agree to Kodi's plan for "research", yes or no? Why? What would you do differently?
Q2. Time to reflect on your own experience with research prior to MBAA 511. Using the below 1-5 scale, how would you rate your own experience with the research process? In your answer, be sure to clearly identify (a) your numerical self-rating, (b) your rationale for this rating, and (c) one specific example of research you have conducted (could be from work experience, school, personal, etc.).
