During my undergrad years, I worked for a department store. During the Christmas holidays, Easter Holidays, and a couple of weekends before school were to start, just to name a few, there would be a shift in the number of people that were needed to work. Most chain stores often hire extra people during the holiday time to help with the influx of people. The new hires were not only helping check people out and clean dressing rooms but they were also helping in customer service, stocking shelves, and unloading merchandise from freight trucks. People were also fighting for hours during this time. During my first year there, the company would only allow for so many people and hours to be worked a day. So to mitigate this they begin to start letting people go who were not showing up and/or not doing their job. Once this began happening, the workers were feeling overworked and had too much of a load on them during their shifts and this was also felt by the customers. The customers were demanding more and more from the associates as the holidays were nearing closer to Christmas. Lines began to grow longer and longer as more customers were shopping with fewer and fewer employees to be seen. The following year was much better.
The next year, not only did the store hire more people and kept more people on they also had an incentive that if one were to apply for a credit card then they had the luxury of checking out in customer service. Customer service usually only had one associate working at a time but now there were at least two at all times during the holiday season. This allowed for more and happier customers to come in and out of the store that holiday season..
