Discussion Board Instructions: Using a real-world example that relates to your major area of study or work experience for this post. Find at least two places where potential energy (PE) is added to the system to keep things in motion. Based on your observations, make at least one estimation of the energy that is being added to the system. You might consider various types of potential energy, including gravitational and spring.
Discussion Board Text:
"In environmental science, there are many things that have potential energy, the first of which is avalanches. Avalanches occur when a significant amount of snow accumulates and eventually, the weight becomes too much and collapses causing the snow from the top of the mountain to fall, pulling more snow from along the mountainside causing the avalanche to grow in size. As the avalanche starts, it is gravitational energy that pulled the avalanche downward. Another form of potential energy is found in volcanoes. Volcanoes have potential energy and once the pressure builds the energy is transferred into kinetic energy and the volcano erupts. This form of potential energy is called geothermal energy, which can be found in both potential and kinetic energy."
In response to the discussion board text, consider the descriptions from the text about different changes in energy. Ask yourself:
- Do the estimates posted seem reasonable?
- Are there other ways you might estimate the energy introduced into the system?
