Discussion - Data Breaches and Security

Data bases with Human Resources information always contain very personal and sensitive data. At one time, this information was never seen outside of the department. Today the Human Resources department provides a number of direct services to employees that increase the department's risk and exposure. Moreover, these services were once the sole responsibility of the Information Technology department. So depending on how these services evolved, there can still be a lot of confusion today.

There are many contemporary articles about how companies are exposed to these weaknesses. Have a look at these articles:

• Is Anyone Really Responsible for Your Companys Data Security? by the Harvard Business Review (2013)

Review some recent data breaches in the news and analyze what you think HR departments need to do to keep the data safe. Include legislative and ethical considerations in your argument. Try to think of both positive and negative examples. When you are ready, follow the instructions below to post you ideas.

Your response should focus on one main idea in no more than a couple of paragraphs. Make sure that you contribute an original idea or build on someone else's idea in a meaningful way. Keep your sentences short and readable. Think though your response using the textbook to back up your answers and explain why.
