Question:
Discussion Forum: Corporate Social Responsibility - Real or Not?
In Monday class session, we discussed companies that present themselves as having strong ties to Corporate Social Responsibility and some of the nuisances with those claims. In the assignment, research a company whose product or service you are familiar with (something you buy or use regularly) to find out what they claim about themself regarding social responsibility and then assess those claims using additional research and your personal experience.
Step 1. Pick a company to research. This should be a company whose product(s) and/or service(s) you are familiar with -- something you buy or use regularly. Since we discussed Waste Management, Starbucks, and Patagonia in class, those companies cannot be used for this assignment.
Step 2.Check your selected company's website for its claims regarding social responsibility. For example, Starbucks's website has a section titled "Societal Impact" at the bottom of its home page, and that then leads to information on actions related to the environment and people. If your selected company does not provide any information on social responsibility, choose another company.
Step 3. Consider the claims made by your company and consider critically the realness of those claims. Do the company's actions support the claims, or do the claims appear bigger than the actions? Do you see any issues with the claims? Perform some research to see if the claims are supported or disputed by others, and also consider your personnel experience with the company's products and/or services.
Step 4. Provide a write-up of your work that includes:
- The company you selected and how you are familiar with its products or services (why you chose the company)
- A summary of the company's claims regarding social responsibility. This can be a paragraph or some bulleted items with an introduction sentence, but it has to be your summary of what you found. Do not just copy and paste text from a website.
- Provide link(s) to the company's claims.
- Your assessment regarding the company's claims.
Part 5. After you make your post, comment on at least two (2) other students' posts. Don't just comment with something like "I agree." Provide a comment with substance. For example, if you agree, say why you agree. Or perhaps share other observations about that company's action as related to the topic.
