Discussion topic/Question

(Keep in mind that the SDLC can be applied to almost any activity you encounter, either at work or outside of work.) One of the biggest problem areas in the SDLC appears during the requirements analysis stage and relates to communication problems between the software developer and the end-user. If misalignment of the end vision is not dealt with at the early stages - the next phase of the process is either forced to be put on hold or the parties continue on unaware leading to the problem being exacerbated in the latter stages.

Respond to the following three questions:

  1. Have you participated in the creation of a project that failed?
  2. Why did it fail?
  3. Based on the System Development Life Cycle Model, what could have been done to help the project succeed? Remember, the SDLC can be applied to almost any activity (including meal preparation or a move or buying a car, etc.). If you have never participated in a project that failed, you can use an example of a project that you have heard of or you can just provide your opinion on what you think might be some of the causes of failed projects. Base your responses on the phases of the SDLC.

There is a select few of group projects that I've participated and failed in. The most prominent project that has taken a turn for the worse, for me personally, is a yearly qualification that is one of the most draining, time-consuming, dreaded moments of my career in artillery. It's a qualification based off an entire section's performance on the gun. We have to be able to shoot deliberate, safe, and efficient fires without violating any of the safety procedures while also meeting the time requirements. This qualification is both a test on physical capability and mental capacity. It's also regarded as a competition between other sections, because everyone wants to be the fastest gun in the west. The most recent time that my section failed this competition was when my section received a fire mission with the special instructions of do not load. We loaded it and failed. In the artillery world, when you receive a fire mission it's "do or die." Somebody's life is on the line. We need to send this round out as fast and safe as possible to prevent that from happening. Receiving that fire mission and disregarding the special instructions disqualified us because a few things could have happened. For example, the tube could cook the round and fire the round on its own. Based off the SDLC, system development life cycle, the design of the qualification was a simple crew drill. With more preparation and harder training, the crew drills would develop into the standard of being able to shoot safe and efficient. Being able to shoot safe and efficient fires would then make us more capable of operating in a combat environment. Hower, even if we train hard and meet the standard of being an effective crew, over time we would still have to do maintenance on our crew drills in order to maintain that standard. Lastly, serving in the military for a long time you realize that the people you know and work with are temporary. One day you'll have to leave and/or replace a soldier that has left, which is one in the same as decommissioning.
