Do you believe that people should have the right to publicly practice their religion in the workplace environment or should religious practices be separate from the work environment? Why or why not? When it comes to the right to publicly practice their religion in the workplace environment the law states in accordance with the "Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination based on religion. This includes refusing to accommodate an employees, sincerely held religious beliefs or practices unless the accommodation would impose an undue hardship (more than a minimal burden on operation of the business)" (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2014). According to the EEOC when it comes to making accommodations for religious beliefs some examples are giving employee a different schedule because they cannot work on Sunday's or some cases Saturday's, making accommodations to dress codes, a pharmacist who does not believe in birth control can be allowed not to fill those prescriptions, and so forth as long as the request is not more than a minimal burden on operations or undue hardship to the business. Here are some examples of "burdens on business that are more than minimal (or an "undue hardship") include: violating a seniority system; causing a lack of necessary staffing; jeopardizing security or health; or costing the employer more than a minimal amount" (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2014). The question the way it's stated is asking if they can practice their religion on the workplace environment which is different than making accommodation for a person to do their job. I believe that one can practice their religion during the lunch breaks, breaks, or as long as those activities do not fringe upon another person's religious beliefs or beliefs. One example I thought of is when someone needs to pray at a certain time of day the employer could make an accommodation to allow that individual to pray at that time, however, that employee should do so in an area that does not fringe up on others and their beliefs or not to hinder operations of the business. We are taught that we should never discuss religion, and politics in an office setting as it's surely going to offend another person in some way or the other. So, if the person who wants to practice their religion in an workplace environment they must also be willing to accept that others have beliefs different from them and as they want others to accommodate them they must be willing to do the same. However, for me the best thing to do is follow the law and make reasonable accommodations but do so in away that it does not harm others.
