Does the type of reading program that is effective depend on the reading ability level of children at the beginning of the program? Two groups of children were taught using phonics and two groups were taught using a sight-reading method. One of the two groups exposed to each reading method scored in the top 1/3 for reading ability on an achievement test and the other scores in the bottom 1/3 for reading ability before beginning their respective reading programs. All children were given a reading achievement test at the end of the year.
