Each partner will do a brief search for job postings of interest. Choose a potential job that might be a possible career path for you make this a useful project!

Once you have found a job posting that appeals to you, save it or screenshot all of it (including descriptions, requirements, etc. as much information as possible please) you will be asked to submit a copy of your job posting as part of Workshop Assignment #1.

STEP 2

Using formal and informal methods, take some time to research the organization for which this job is posted.

STEP 3

Each partner will share a copy of their respective job posting with the other. Then, each will take turns asking the following questions of the other and record the answers:

  1. What relevant skills, experience, talents, and/or education do you have that would be useful in a position like this?
  2. What inspires or attracts you to work for this organization and why?
  3. Is there one personal anecdote or story related to this job or organization you think would make you an especially suitable candidate for the position?

Note: when you are asking the questions, please help your partner expand and brainstorm by asking additional prompting questions that might draw out more useful information.

STEP 4

Review the notes with your partner and add or omit anything you think is important at this time.

STEP 5

Use these notes to construct a draft email to a fictional manager at this organization recommending your partner for this position.

DRAFT 1: a first draft of this email that you will be asked to submit along with your final draft.

Be sure to use the steps, tips, and tricks outlined in the 3X3 Writing Process that is covered in our textbook in chapters 4-6. It is OK if this draft includes a few honest typos or grammatical errors this is why we are getting feedback in STEP 6 and the best assignments will have clear improvements from DRAFT 1 to FINAL DRAFT.

STEP 6

Allow you partner to review DRAFT 1 and give you feedback verbally or otherwise. Create a FINAL DRAFT of this email that incorporates the feedback, is edited and polished enough that you think is fit to send to a real-life manager at that organization.
