CONNECTING TIME(S) AND PLACE(S): THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SETTING The setting, or time and place of a story, is an often-overlooked or underdeveloped part of fiction writing. From a reader's perspective, the more specific a setting, the more realistic your characters and related conflict(s) tend to seem. Crafting a specific setting also can help you craft dialogue and (inter)actions for your characters. As the short story author, you can more vividly imagine, and therefore write down, the kinds of conversations and actions that your characters would experience in a given setting.
