This decision marks a significant departure from the legal principle of stare decisis, a foundational doctrine in American jurisprudence that "enables and encourages" reliance on the legal system, promoting "stability and predictability by adhering to prior judicial rulings" (Garner et al., 2016; Harvard Law Review, 2024).
