Create a discussion thread and include the following: 1. In the module, you read about Nielsen's three types of digital divide. You also read about how Miniwatts Marketing Group updated this definition of the digital divide. In your discussion thread, summarize the types of digital divide (from Nielsen and Miniwatts) and explain what specific subgroups are most likely to be part of that particular divide. Describe which divide you or people that you know are a part of. For each type, give a suggestion as to how the divide is being or might be lessened (with minimal financing-because often there isn't money just to throw at the problem). - You might speak specifically for how these divides might be addressed in medical, business, or educational environments. 2. Friedman describes globalization in his book "The World is Flat" in the early 2000 s. The main idea is that technology is making it easier for people to connect and work despite their location. Due to this, we are able to collaborate with other people and systems that do not exist geographically to us. While there are many opportunities for this, there is also the concern that jobs can be outsourced for cheaper pay and longer hours because the tasks can be done online. Here is an example: In Friedman's book, he gives an example of how elements of fast food are being outsourced. When a person orders at the drive through, they give their order to someone in another country. That is then populated onto a screen back in the physical location of the drive through. This means that the only task employees in the building are responsible for is packing the food. The idea is to minimize the tasks of what the employees are to do and cut down on the mistakes. Another idea is if the packaging of the food can be automated with robotics so that there aren't any employees in the actual building and the only interaction is the ordering from a person in another country. This is an example of how globalization is perhaps making businesses more efficient but also potentially negatively affecting people. - Think about careers that might be affected positively and negatively via globalization. 1. Give an example of how a career could be benefited and how a career (maybe a different one) could be negatively impacted via globalization.
