Employment Case StudyMarco sent this email, asking for advice. *This is a real email. But the names have been changed to protect privacy.Short version: Chris*(The General Manager) is abusive, has harassed and threatened employees on multiple occasions. Many staff members have quit and those who are caught speaking with the labour board are fired and forced to sign an agreement that waives their right to speak with Labour, Human Rights or bad mouthing the company. Our HR department is compromised, and no one is being held responsible. Full version: The week that I started at Murphy's Towing I had already been hearing warnings that Chris was quote "abusive" "a bully" and that he "enjoys abusing employees". I was the only person in my building who did not speak about Chris in this way. A couple months ago, Chris called me into his office to tell me I had two choices: to quit or be fired. I was confused and asked him about the quality of my work which he stated he had no problem with but that I have been bad mouthing him and the company and showcased a consistent attitude problem that many people have taken issue with. I was confused as I had never heard anything about this before and kept to myself while others spoke of Chris and theorized about his issues. I asked for examples of how I have spoken, and he said that was not relevant. Whenever I would try to explain to him that there was a misunderstanding, he would cut me off and say "I am not going to go down this road much longer. Are you resigning?" or "you might think you're having conversations in private, and that it's a safe space but it does get back to me". He began getting louder and closer to me and I began to cry. His eyes lit up and he kept telling me to quit. I eventually stood up and he smiled and asked once more. I said no and he told me to go away and think about it before he makes the decision for me. After I calmed down, I spoke to my coworkers and apologized if I had ever made working with me an unpleasant experience and each one of them immediately realized that it was Chris trying to quote "beat me down" which he has done to many others. They informed me that he most likely feels he can threaten me easier than them and can therefore use their words as an excuse to take anger out on me.I did not quit but Chris immediately began making my job hell. He would snap in my face and speak very rudely to me; he would deny all designs I made regardless of how the other managers and owner felt about them. It got to the point where I would need to get someone else to take credit for my work so that it would be approved. I emailed Parvati our HR Admin and Chris emailed me telling me not to speak to Parvati... Later that day we were informed that Parvati's role had now been changed to Benefits Coordinator and we no longer had HR. Chris would often send managers after me to punish me for not submitting work that I could prove on the spot I did submit, I started to worry he would delete my work or emails so I began taking my laptop everywhere with me out of fear and backed up all the evidence I had of his actions and behavior, as well as proof that I was performing well above expectations and taking on more responsibility than my role had laid out. It got so bad that the Trailer Shop manager came back from two meetings in tears and after one she told Anna quote "Chris spoke to me the way he speaks to Marco". He stuck his finger in her face, got loud and only ramped up when she showed emotion, just like with me. Towards the end of my time there, everyone in my building was making plans to quit and all had said on numerous occasions it is because Chris abuses people, creates a toxic environment and will not stop because he appears to enjoy it.I emailed the owner of Murphy's about the threatening interactions I have had and mentioned to some coworkers privately that I was planning on speaking to Human Rights or Labour about it if it did not stop. The very next day I was fired for "no cause" and they are now demanding I sign a Full and Final Release that explicitly states I can never pursue a claim with Human Rights, Labour Standards, a lawyer or can speak publicly about my experience there. 1.What is your advice to Marco?2.What phone numbers/websites should he go to?3.What, based on the previous employment cases that you read, will happen at Murphys?4.What might happen with Marco?
