Encik Khairan is the Managing Director (MD) of Teknologi Bakalalan Resources, an organization dealing with producing greeting cards, and has been with the company for 30 years. The majority of employees in the organization are men rather than women. Most of the women employed are in supporting positions, such as clerks and assistant managers. Encik Khairan helieves that women are only good at following orders. He also believes that women cannot make good decisions and they are not supposed to work in the technical field. His employees frequently receive soundbites like 'Women will not relocate for a promotion," or "Women are difficult to work with." Encik Khairan, on the other hand, is good in getting the job done on time. He trusts his employees very much and he knows how to influence his employees. 'I know that all of you are very hard- working and I strongly believe that we will achieve our targets through your efforts," is another common statement. The above situation occurs when his expectations of the employees cause them to act in a way that is consistent with the expectations. Teknologi Bakalalan Resources does not have a lot of resources and the management is not anxious in making changes. The organization was too late to introduce computerized technology to its production operations. However, Encik Khairan bought three high- powered computers equipped with the latest software. He called his employees and told them about the changes that are going to be made. He also acknowledged that they are going to have a lot more to learn in order to be able to do all their work using the computers. He stressed that the changes would dramatically speed up production and eventually results in significant cost savings. He offered to send the employees for a one- week course specifically designed to train artists in the new technology. Eventually, there were employees who were not happy and felt stressed out with his management style. Encik Khairan received many resignation letters, because of work-related stress experienced by the employees. Instead of changing his management style, Encik Khairan told the employees that they were free to leave the organization if they wished to and that any employees who do not perform will be dismissed. In a meeting with all the employees recently, Encik Khairan again emphasized that good employees will be rewarded; whereas those who are not would be punished. a. Identify and explain the appropriate sources of power and influence tactic used by Encik Khairan. b. C. (15 marks) If you were Encik Khairan's manager, what advice would you give to him? Justify your answer. (10 marks) Suggest characteristics of work ethics in Islam that Encik Khairan should possess in order to improve his relationship with his employees.
