Engineering Problem 3: Pumps
CNG533 Transport Phenomena
An industrial refrigeration loop consists of a series of metallic pipes containing high-pressure refrigerant which absorbs and releases heat readily. To facilitate rapid heat transfer, the piping is often made of long copper tubing with an associated pump to recirculate the refrigerant.
For one such refrigeration unit, which uses liquid R-134a refrigerant at an average of 7C, the copper tubing is being replaced with new copper tubing and a more modern pump, all installed at ground level. The list of copper tubing parts being installed and a pump curve for the new pump is attached.
Choose the operating condition, impeller size, and horsepower at which the pump should be run to maximize its efficiency.
Hint: R-134a is not a liquid at atmospheric pressure and 7C and requires some static head to keep it liquid in the refriqeration loop.
