ENGR 1166- Transportation Engineering Module
Homework Assignment
Project Description
As the Planner for a regional transportation agency, you have been asked to develop a design for a proposed intersection. The intersection will need to accommodate the movement of pedestrians, cars, single-unit trucks (e.g., vans, pickup trucks, ambulances), and buses. While the efficient movement of all modes is important, the regional transportation agency has targeted safety as the number one priority. You are tasked with creating a MicroStation drawing of your proposed intersection design and providing a description of your design decisions as they relate to intersection safety. Your design must follow the requirements below.
Project Requirements
a. The intersection must be a 4-leg intersection with roadways intersecting at 90-degree angles.
b. The intersecting roadways must have two travel lanes in each direction.
c. The regional agency requires the existence of sidewalks along all newly constructed roads.
d. Roadways must be drawn such that center lines, lane lines and sidewalks are clearly distinguishable.
e. Key intersection design elements that target safety improvements (e.g., refuge islands, auxiliary lanes) must be clearly labeled on your drawaing.
f. Pavement markings (e.g., stop lines, crosswalks) Lnust be labeled.
g. Your drawing must include your name, date, and drawing subject.
h. In addition to your drawing, the regional transportation agency would like a written description of your design decisions. This dacument should focus on how you addressed safety in your intersection design and is limited to 1-2 paragraphs.
An example of a simple intersection design is shown below. Your task is to edit this simple design to incorporate increased safety measures using any of the design elements presented in the Intersection Design video.
3. Submission requirements
Submit a .pdf file of your Microstation drawing and either a .docx or .pdf file of your written design description. Your submitted files must honor the following naming conventions:
MicroStation drawing: IntersectionDesignfile_Firstname_Lastname.pdf Written description: DesignDescription_Firstname_Lastname.pdf (or .docx)
