You are a supervisor in a company that requires you to perform monthly evaluations on employees. The evaluation form consists of a checklist of common employee rating criteria, such as punctuality, performance, customer service, etc. In addition to this checklist, you are required to write a paragraph that will provide an overall employee review.

The first employee evaluation is for Bob, one of your senior team members. Bob is frequently ten to twenty minutes late for work. When he arrives, he immediately begins working and if he is not finished with his assigned tasks at break time or lunch time, he does not take his scheduled breaks and takes a shortened lunch. Bob's work is superior and rarely has mistakes. Bob works very well as a member of a team, but his team sometimes complains about him being late to morning meetings. You have observed that Bob completes all team assignments on time and sometimes early. Customers ask for Bob by name when they come in to do business with your company.

As you complete the employee evaluation form, you remember that the last time you reported that someone was often late for work, management placed that employee on probation and the employee was ultimately fired for chronic lateness. Bob is valuable member of the team, and you are concerned that this could be his fate. You know that Bob is a single father responsible for taking his three children to three different schools each morning. You begin to wonder if Bob should be penalized for this problem.
