Ethies by Design: Individual Paper (25%): Ultimately, the principles discussed in this class are ones that 1 hope you will enact in your organizations throughout your careers. In this paper, I will ask you to pick an organization and identify ways to improve its behavior around ethics. You may choose any company you wish. However, note that the paper asks you to offer a meaningful summary of the company"s current approach to ethics. If you choose a lange company, you can probably get by based on publicly available articles and documents, such as annual reports. If you choose a small company, you will probably need to interview people inside the company to obtain the needed information.
Section 1. The Organization and its Challenges
Discuss why you chose to focus on your organization (about I page)
Elaborate on 3-5 areas in which the organization needs improvement. The best way to do this is to summarize what the company is currently doing, citing evidence from company documents or personal interviews. Note that just as a company cam be making a profit yet still find ways to improve its financials, a company can be engaging in many ethical practices yet still find ways to improve. So, please do not feel limited to socially irresponsible organizations for this project. Students offen find that it is particularly generative to write about a company they hope to be working at after the program (about 2 pages).
Section 2. Designing Change
Provide an overview of 2-3 initiatives that you would like to propose for your orgmization. Note that I am purposefully including a lot of flexibility here in what I consider to be an initiative. You might, for instance, propose an initiative around diversity that includes several subcomponents (about 1 page)
Offer a detailed discussion of each of the initiatives you proposed. Here, it is important to note that this project is in lieu of a final exam. As such, it is my expectation that the initiatives you propose will be rooted in the course content, demonstrating both a mastery of the material and creativity in how it might be extended and applicd. Any sort of program you can imagine an organization launching is fair game, whether on the concept of ethical decisionmaking, customer rights, employee diversity, environmental sustainability, etc. (about 4 pages)
The final write-up will be gruded on the following criteria:
Application of Course Content (15 points): Paper is effectively linked to the course content, demonstrating an understanding of how these concepts can be applied.
Specificity of Action (5 points) Action plan is specific with regards to what programs you will develop, how and where those elements will be developed, when the elements will be developed by (as a checkup), and who can hold you accountable and assess whether those elements are successfully developed.
Innovation (5 points) Ideas show thoughtfulness and creativity, moving beyond "Zusiness as usual" to propose ideas that are differentiators.
