Evaluating Air Quality in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria This week's lesson gave me a better understanding of how to check and interpret the Air Quality Index (AQI). Since I live outside the U.S., I used IQAir to find the air quality rating for my location. City: Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria AQI Score: 112 (at the time of checking) Health Concern Level: Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Air Quality Description: An AQI of 112 indicates that the air may pose health risks to certain groups, including young children, elderly individuals, and people with respiratory or heart conditions. For the general public, the risk is lower. The main pollutant in Abeokuta is PM2.5, which consists of fine particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, potentially causing health issues. Reflection: This activity showed me how important it is to monitor air pollution regularly. Even when the air looks clean, it can still contain harmful substances that aren't visible. I now understand that the AQI is a practical tool for informing peopleespecially those with health vulnerabilitiesabout when it's safer to be outdoors. Given Abeokuta's growing urban population and increasing traffic, I believe more attention should be given to reducing emissions, promoting clean energy, and protecting our environment.
