Question 1

You have been given a Boeing 737 outboard airfoil cross section, as an excel file (b737d.xlsx).

You will use Excel to determine the cross sectional area, A, of the midspan airfoil using a suitable method of numerical integration or any other method of calculating areas.

Your method should also work for any dataset of coordinates up to 100 pairs of upper and lower surface chord coordinates.

Note: The data set (b737d.xlsx) has x,y values scaled to an airfoil chord length of 1m. For the purposes of this assignment you can assume that the outboard chord of a Boeing 737 is actually 2.895m long.

Your method should also include a scatter graph of the cross section, showing BOTH the upper and lower surfaces of the wing on a single chart.

Allocation of marks for question 1:

- Presenting the wing section as a scatter graph, properly scaled and labeled 10 marks

- Use of a recognized computation method to determine the area of the surfaces 10 marks

- Obtains the correct result for B737 data and correctly implements method 15 marks

- Method works for any dataset up to 100 pairs of data 8 marks

- Design of spreadsheet for ease of operation - how method works etc. Provide

a name, formula and reference for the computation method 10 marks
