Exercise 12-1 Assessing and Using Your Human and Social Capital In this exercise you will begin with an inventory of your human and social capital, identifying when and how you use it, and identifying alternatives for increasing it. Start by identifying the knowledge, skills, and abilities you acquired and developed in school and other formal training venues such as seminars, workshops, and intern- ships. In addition to the program-specic skills (e.g., accounting, engineering, human resources), be sure to include general skills such as written and oral communication, and the ability to work with others. Next, identify your natural talents and abilities. In addition to ingenuity, creativity, or artistic ability, this includes personality characteristics such as a strong work ethic, determination, conscientiousness, etc. Finally, identify your social capitalyour work-related contacts, both inside and outside of the organization. When you have identied the human and social capital that you already possess, identify human and social capital that you wish to acquire and the steps you need to take to obtain it.
