Prediction of Appearance of Other Elements Four elements are listed in Column A of Table 2.3 below. Complete Column B for each element by looking at the periodic chart to decide if the element is a metal or nonmetal based on its location relative to the diagonal stair-step line. Then in Column C predict whether you expect the element to look shiny (metals usually look shiny) or DULL (usually nonmetals look dull). After you have completed Columns B and C, then go look at the samples of the four elements below and report your observations (shiny or dull) in Column D. In Column E report whether your predictions in Column C agree with your observations in Column D, if they are the same you should write "yes", if they are different you should write "no". Finally, in Column Findicate which of the following reasons describes why you think the prediction was correct or incorrect. Reason A: The element followed the prediction as expected. Reason B: The metal was dull because it was oxidized (tarnished). Reason C: The nonmetal was shiny due to being crystalline, but not lustrous like a metal. Reason D: The element is close to the stair step line and therefore takes on the properties of the opposite side.
