Explain a situation in which it was difficult to be a leader. While it may be difficult to be vulnerable and share a moment of weakness or coming up short, this situation will likely prove more useful and productive then recounting a moment of success!
I chose to discuss a situation in which I was a leader but made the wrong decision. In short, I was asked by coworker if an in-store order was to be completed, as we saw on our online order platform that an order for the same customer was canceled. We both agreed that the order was canceled because it seemed like a duplicate order.
Later, my manager arrived on shift and asked me what happened with the order as the customer was here to pick up their order. I pulled her to the side and apologized, telling her that I thought it was a duplicate and had been canceled. She told me that it would be better to ask another person their thoughts on the matter and attempt confirmation with other departments, particularly our catering department as they forwarded over the suspected duplicate.
Ideally, I would have confirmed with our other departments. In this situation, the decision had been made before the store opened, and catering would not have arrived for another four hours. Considering that, I should have asked my coworker to make the order anyway because at that point, the worst-case scenario is an extra order that can be donated or sold.
My weakness in this scenario was an assumption, and my strategy to overcome that is to consistently research a question asked of me. The research I should have done was to confirm with other departments and question why there was a duplicate order in the first place. Opening this line of increased communication will ensure that confusing orders can be clarified for efficient production of it, and timely completion so that our customers can gather their orders on time.
In your response, suggest another strategy that might help them to improve their identified weakness to bring out the best in them. Remember to provide constructive criticism with something actionable.
