EXPLAIN STEP BY STEP. PROBLEM 6.10
Determine the force in each member of the truss shown. State
whether each member is in tension or compression.
This problem was solved in Recitation - Study and follow the given
solution.
In addition, also do the following:
(a) This is a cantilever truss, supported at A and E. Sketch the
conceptual "segmentally linear" deformed state of the truss.
(b) Compute the "overturning clockwise moment" exerted by the
applied load about any point along the line AE. Then show that the
horizontal reactions at A and E define a couple (2 equal vectors in
opposite directions), and that the "resisting counterclockwise
moment" exerted by this couple equilibrates the overturning
moment by the applied loads.
(c) Reflect and Think: Sketch a cantilever beam that can replace
this truss with the same span and applied concentrated
loads. Then, compute the reactions of the equivalent cantilever
beam, and show that the moment reaction at the support is "equal
to the resisting moment" in the truss. Also, that the vertical
reaction is the same as in the truss. Sketch the deformed state of
the beam.
