Exponential Word Problems Classwork

For each of the three problems:

• give a function or equation to represent the relationship between the time (input) and the final amount (output).
• Figure out what your input would be.
• Use your calculator or the Desmos calculator to find the final answer.
• Make sure to include units (i.e. $, Incidents, etc.).

1. Exponential Growth: In 1996, there were 2573 computer viruses and other computer security incidents. During the next 7 years, the number of incidents increased by about 92% each year. Use your model to estimate the number of security issues there were in 2003.
2. Exponential Decay: You buy a new car for $26,000. The value of the car decreases by 18% each year. Determine the value of the car after 3 years.
3. Beanie babies were super popular in the 1990s. If Stinger the scorpion was purchased for $8 in 1996, and his value increased by 18% each year, how much would he be worth now?
