Most of them are franchises of international chains like Starbucks, Costa, Gloria Jeans, etc. New York Coffee, (NYC) is a coffee shop in Bahrain owned by a local Bahraini. It has several branches in Bahrain but is faced with intense competition from the famous international brands mentioned above. NYC survives on the quality of its coffee which is roasted and ground in Bahrain. It also has a wide-ranging menu of hot and cold dishes that are made on the premises which other coffee shops do not offer. This has required NYC to invest heavily in roasting and grinding machines and kitchen equipment such as a wood fired pizza oven and pasta maker. And because of the quality of its food, it has become a well know brand in Bahrain. NYC menu is reasonably priced thus making it affordable to most Bahrainis. Most branches of NYC are quite full during breakfast and lunch times. In general, the coffee shop industry has no shortage of customers because more and more Bahrainis, including students are frequenting these places. However, in the last few years, opening of new businesses in Bahrain has become easier as the government has eased regulations, and agencies like Tamkeen and BDB are helping to finance new start-ups. This has led to many new coffee shops opening all over Bahrain thus posing a new threat to existing coffee shops in Bahrain. NYC is aware of this developing situation and is planning a new strategy to reposition itself.
