Marcus, a licensed electrical engineer, works for a private university on construction and renovation projects. Marcus's immediate manager, Johnson, is an architect, and next in the chain of command, Phillip, is an administrator, a man with no technical background. Without verifying with Marcus on design and technical requirements, Phillip, often prepare project cost estimates and submit to university management. In cases where it becomes evident that actual costs obtained based on Marcus design and specifications are going to exceed these estimates, Phillip will pressure Marcus to reduce design and specification standard. One such occasion involves the renovation of a warehouse to convert storage space into office space. Among the design and specifications prepared by Marcus is the installation of emergency doors and exit lights. These are requirements under Uniform Building By Laws (UBBL) 1984 and mandated by the local building code. As part of his effort to bring down actual costs, Phillip insists that the emergency doors and exit lights be omitted from the renovation. Marcus strongly objects and refuses to yield, Phillip then accuses Marcus of being a disruptive influence in the workplace.
