Figure A1-1 shows a cross-section through a 5 mm diameter braided steel flexible cable that is used on a farm trailer. The cable has a failure load of 25 kN and comprises 7 bundles of 19 individual steel wires. To protect against corrosion, the cable is galvanised and covered in a heat-shrink polyolefin sleeve; also, the ends of the cable are crimped and are encased in epoxy resin. Because of the rigidity of the end-fixings, the wire bundles move relative to one another as the braids twist and untwist in response to bending of the cable in service.
