Final Project

All individuals will work on a similar overall project, but each individual will have its own instance of the project data and will build separate and unique interface of its instance. You will get detailed instructions with each assignment. Each student will turn in a single solution to each assignment.

  1. Develop a proposal for the project. Due Date: March 12, 2020 at 12:00PM

This proposal must include:

  1. A separate cover page indicating the name of your company, your name (with email), the course number, and course section.
  2. A narrative description of the business used for the project or application being created. Included below
  3. Identification of the information needs what information would help solve the problem or allow one to take advantage of the opportunity.
  4. Initial list of relations (tables) that have been identifie This should come naturally from the above descriptions. List of fields for each relation.

First, individuals must submit an actor or actress for approval for their project ideas. Informal discussions with the professor throughout the semester will help to refine the project and the proposal. Individuals will create a movie database (Use imdb.com or rottentomatoes.com for reference). Each individual will need to pick an actor or actress. Each actor or actress can only be chosen once.

Narrative Description Movies Incorporated is owned and operated by McKenna Applegate since 1955. She has four full-time employees who currently work for her. McKenna would like to expand her business and create a more efficient way of how they handle data. McKenna has approached you and needs a way to track all of their movies in a database. Currently information is saved in excel files, word documents, and pdf files. The files are usually printed and stored in a binder. When requesting reports, such as how many movies [YOUR ACTOR] has been in, this can take weeks since all the information is kept in several locations and not always easily accessible. Many times, her employees have given inaccurate information. McKenna would like all the information saved in one location, a database, so reports can be run in a timely manner.

Remember below is the beginning of an idea, and must be thought out more clearly for the proposal. You will need to write additional information specifically on what additional information should be keep in the database and WHY creating a database will solve McKennas issue. Include what relations are needed to be created, the attributes for each relation, and how each relation has a relationship. Basic Identification of the information needs - McKenna has requested information kept on movies including but not limited to the genres, the actors and actresses, the characters portrayed by actors, and who directed the movie. In addition, McKenna would like to store the release date, running time and the parental rating of each movie.

For the proposal, you need to create a name for your company. When developing your proposal, keep in mind the following:

  • Movies have multiple actors
  • Actors can play multiple roles in the movie
  • Movies can have multiple directors
  • Movies can have multiple genres

Submit proposal through Canvas.

  1. Database Design: Relations Due Date: April 7, 2020 at 12:00PM

The next step is to take the updated requirements discussed in the proposal (list of relations and attributes), and create a relational model. This step will require the individual to determine the functional dependencies using the process of normalization. Be sure all relations are in third normal form (3NF). To designate the primary key (or keys) for each relation, the attribute should be noted by an underline.

  1. Database Design: Updated Relations Due Date: April 14 at 12:00PM

A document called Final Project Proposal has been uploaded into Final Project Step 2. The document is a checklist to help you refine the relations created. Read through the checklist and make any and all updates to your Database Design: Relations. This step will require the individual to be sure all relations are in third normal form (3NF), and the correct syntax is used.

  1. Database Implementation Due Date: May 8, 2020 at 12:00PM Each Individual will implement the database from the normalized set of relations created from the E-R diagram or the Physical Design (whichever is easier to convert from). Data should be supplied for each table. The amount of data should be such that the need for the database is clear. Individuals must include at least 15 movies and at least 3 actors (not including your main actor) per movie.
  2. Application Implementation Due Date: May 8, 2020 at 12:00PM The application (forms, reports, queries, menus) can then be create once the tables have been completed. For the queries, provide the associated SQL statements. These are to reflect the needs of the company.
  3. Write Up Final Report Due Date: May 8, 2020 at 12:00PM

The final step is to prepare a formal report. This report should include:

  1. Separate cover page indicating the name of your company, your name (with email), the course number, and course section.
  2. The original proposal report submitted earlier in the semester (Step 1)
  3. The original relational model submitted earlier in the semester (Step 2)
  4. The updated relational model based on changes determined through the process (Step 3)
  5. The E-R diagram and DBDL submitted for Project 4.
  6. A narrative conclusion section that includes and describes:
    1. The individuals experience with the project.
    2. If the proposed benefits can be accomplished with the project.
    3. Since you are almost completed with the course, indicate additional value added items you will think would be beneficial to the company (additional reports, other information that should be stored, etc.).
    4. Any final comments and conclusions.

Frequently Asked Questions on Proposal

  1. What should be included in the narrative description of the business? Use the narrative given above. Must be included in the Proposal.
  2. What is required for the identification of the information needed? Write about a half of a page identifying the information. Use what is given but must expand the info. No credit will be given if no additional info is added. Some information that should be included is specific information and examples on the movie genres, directors, characters, and actors. This should be as detailed as possible as this will be helpful with the remaining part of the proposal. Introduce your main actor or actress and why you choose this particular actor. Describe how a database will be helpful to McKenna and his employees.
  3. What if relations or/and attributes are needed to be added later? This is just a Proposal. As with any development of an application, changes will be needed once, other steps are completed.
