Case #1:Jane Williams is a new assistant professor of literature at the local university. She is twenty-six years old. She has no relatives in the area and her family lives 500 miles away in the city where she went to college for the eight years it took to earn her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She is charged with fraud in obtaining $50,000 in student loans during the previous three years by lying about her income and assets on student loan application forms. Seven years earlier she pleaded guilty in her hometown to a misdemeanor charge of underage drinking.

Case #2:Joe Cullen is charged with DUI first degree and assault in the second degree (these are C Felonies in Kentucky and carry a possible prison term of 5-10 years if convicted). Joe was driving home from his son's wedding at 1:30am. On the way home he hits another vehicle with a woman and her 10-year-old child causing serious injuries. Both mother and daughter are in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. At the time of the crash, he was not speeding or driving reckless, but his blood alcohol level was .08 (just at the legal limit). He is a widowed, 70-year-old retired high school teacher who has no prior record.

Case #3:Susan Claussen is charged with theft for ordering and eating dinner at an expensive restaurant, and then leaving without paying the bill. She has been charged with and entered guilty pleas to the offense on five previous occasions over the past three years. She has been placed on probation several times and served one thirty-day jail sentence. She is unemployed and a life-long resident of the city. She lives with her parents.
