One of the things Chris Adrian does so well in this story is slowly provide us with backstory throughout rather than giving an exposition dump early. And then, at the end of the story, we don't get a full wrap-up of things, but we do have a sense of irrevocable change and a sort of resolution. What I'd like you to do here is comment on the various ways the element of story is used in this piece of fiction. What's the conflict (or conflicts)? What about the crisis point and resolution? If we think about plot in terms of connections/disconnections, what do we see? You might also consider how we're given backstory.
