First off we must tackle the data without fear. Data is data and the numbers and history of discrimination in hiring of police officers is something we must grapple with to enact policies, procedures and laws that provide equity and justice for the communities where police serve. While it may be easy cast some of what we talk about in simple terms, there is always nuance, and an appreciation for the arc of history we must confront when trying to bring justice to how government serves the people now.

1. Describe salient features of discrimination in policing within police organizations.
2. What were laws were enacted and how did the nation attempt to confront discrimination
3. What were some of the reactions and where did the backlash to efforts to reverse discrimination in hiring and police practices?

So this may be a refrain, but we all know discrimination has existed since the inception of the United States. Today is continuing to pit people against each other and it pervades all aspects of society. To act like it doesn't exist and that all things must be equal can arguably be too simplistic. But the battles rage on, and the consequences are real.

1. What has Chicago done to diversify the police force and what are the current or recent numbers about how the police force looks like the community it serves?
2. Find a city or town that has made great efforts to address the lack of diversity in its police and share how they made that happen?
3. What do you think about diversity in the police? Share some of your insights into where we are at now and where the country needs to go to be more equitable (or not) in your opinion. There are those that believe the numbers of African American police in Chicago will go down after the recent riots, so keep that in mind as you share.
