Womens Rights (I)Community Chosen: Womens Rightsa.Community Definition: Womans rights are ultimately human rights. Throughout the year's women have been looked at less than and belittled by the male community making them seem inferior to them. The fight for equality, freedom, and justice has and will always be a struggling battle as woman across nations seek to be valued and respected as equally to men.(II)Supporting ideas:a.[1stcase] Womens rights also known as the women's liberation movement was a movement that was begun by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. A main reason for the suffrage movement was solely because women could not vote. Race and age had nothing to do with the fact that women were kept away from politics. Back in the 1800s rich white men had found it unnecessary to include woman in politics, making them feel inferior and useless. The Womens rights movement was started on July 19th, 1848 along with Lucretia Mott in order to address and bring awareness to the importance of women having equal rights. After 70 years of constant fighting and defeats women were finally granted the right to vote. This milestone was not only a huge win for woman all over the world but the beginning of women setting the tone and having their voices heard for equal opportunities.Brenda MendezPOLISCI 001Professor HammanDecember 1st2020 i.Although woman can vote and work, certain laws can always be put into place and adjusted in order to make the divide between women and men smaller than it should be. Due to past mindsets still being intact women have not been given as equal opportunities as men, leading to more awareness being brought to light daily.(I)[2ndCase] Abortion needs to remain legal in all the U.S, and the 14thamendment protects all privacy rights for women allowing the proceeding of a safe termination of an unwanted pregnancy. With crimes such as rape being a source for unwanted pregnancies, or medical conditions such as disabilities, and drug addictions within an expectant mother provides them the freedom of doing what works in their best interest and the unborn child. With Trumps presidency (2016-2020) he has made several threats to women across the nation saying that he would make it harder for a woman to get an abortion, in doing so, not only is he disrupting a woman's freedom of her own body but would also be causing mental challenges to woman who have become a victim of rape pregnancies. Ultimately not a man or woman should be told of what to do with his or her own body.1)Minor v. Happersett, 88 U.S. 162 a)Virginia Minor was a citizen of Missouri and a leader of the womans suffrage movement. On the day of October 15th, 1872, she had made the attempt to register to vote in her county, but because of the lawsthat were in place in the Brenda MendezPOLISCI 001Professor HammanDecember 1st2020 1800s women were not allowed to vote. Reese Harpersett was the man who was denying her the application to register herself to vote, and with the help of her husband Francis Minor they were both able to take the case to court arguing that the denial of the application had violated Minors 14thamendment rights. b)14thamendment, section 1 stated that every citizen born in the United States had every right to equal protection under the laws. The amendment was initially set for former slaves to have the right to vote, but with the wording that was used it had been made undeniably clear that women were still unable to vote. The final decision had been made stating that because it was written in the constitution no error had been made ultimately leaving women out of their voting rights.1.Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113a.Roe v. Wadewas a prominent case that dealt with the issues of abortion, examining whether a woman should be allowed to terminate a pregnancy. This occurred when a woman by the name of Norma McCorvey also known as (Jane Roe) sought to have an abortion in the state ofTexas, unfortunately, it was not as easy to get an abortion since it was still considered illegal unless the pregnancy made a threat to the mother's life which was not the case for Roe. Since the termination of the pregnancy was not able to happen Roe wasresponsible for carrying the fetus and eventually giving birth to the child, and eventually placing child up for adoption.b.The lawyer responsible for helping arrange the adoption of Roes infant introduced her to two lawyers that would eventually help fight the constitutionality of Texas laws. Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee helped take Brenda MendezPOLISCI 001Professor HammanDecember 1st2020 Roes case to the supreme court and argued that the disapproval for an abortion was not only unconstitutional but had violated Roes 14thamendment rights. By January of1973 the court had decided on a ruling, stating that a womans right to an abortion fell within her rights to privacy and grantedthe rights to a protection. The ruling of this decision made a positive impact on abortion laws within 46 other states.
