Floating Deck Cost Estimate As a side hustle to help pay for College, you have gotten into the deck building business. You have been asked to give an estimate for a 14' x 16' free floating deck (.e., not attached to an existing structure.) The deck will have the following dimensions and requirements: 14' x 16 Joists max spacing is 16" on center Joists will be 2"x6" pressure treated boards Post foundations with max span of 8 feet in any direction. Assume one 6"x6" Pressure treated post per foundation. Assume two 80-pound bags of concrete mix per post. Galvanized bolts will be used for the attachment of the joist to the post. Joist hangers shall be used. Blocking between joist shall be done every 4 feet. 3" screws will be used to attach blocking to joist and other locations as needed. Assume there will be a need for one set of steps (3 steps) and should be a minimum of 6 feet in width. The step stringers are also spaced 16" on center. You will have two options on deck boards and need to do an estimate for each. o Price using pressure treated deck boards (must also include the first treatment of the deck boards) o Price using composite deck boards Labor cost for the deck will be $1500 if pressure treated deck boards are used and $2000 if composite deck boards are used.. Your deliverables will be the following: 1. A short memo to your client explaining what is included in the estimate along with the cost for each option as well as a scaled sketch of the decking showing the joist and foundation components. Also, you need to make a recommendation on which deck board option you would go with and give your justification. Obtain prices from Lowe's or Home Depot (this can be done online or by visiting the store.) 2. A scaled sketch of the decking showing the joist. 3. Include a table/spreadsheet with the line item cost and total cost for the two different options. See example below.
