PUMP SPECIFICATION PROJECT Water treatment is vital in a power plant to reduce scale formation and caustic embrittlement. Techniques used in muclear power plants to treat water are to run it through an ion-exchange process or Zeolite treatment. After the zeolite has exchanged its sodium for calcium or magnesium, it must be regenerated. Hydrochloric acid is used in the regeneration process as follows: 2HCl+Ca(HOO3)22H2CO3+CaCl2 The HCl arrives at the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant in a 20,800-gallon tank car. Information on a typical tank car is given on Leam umder the DP3 folder (6-Tank Car Information \& 7-Eduction Pipe Information). The tank car is off-loaded through a 3.0-inch NPT hose firting and a 25-foot long flexible discharge hose to your pump. Based on off-load requirements, there is 30 psig air supplied to the tank car to pressurize in for discharge. You need to design the pump and piping sytrem for the plant so that the tank car will be ulloaded in less than 3 hours. The acid storage tank (vented to the atmosphere to awoid pressure buildme) is located on the trrbine floor of the planti, 100 feet above the niliroad tracks. The starage tark holds 30,000 gollons and is 15 feet till. There is a total of 625 feet of pipe needed (you specify type and diameter). There are eight (8) 90 degree bends in the piping, one globe valve, and two ball valves (may treat as gate valves). These will all be located between the pump and the stornge tark and are necessary to go around comers and ascend the levels. The pump is expected to last for at least 10 years with minimm maintenance in this situation. Make sure your pump is gritable for the corrosion and viscosity of this material. This is an indivicual part of the overall assignment. The submittal will be in the form of a quiz with 25 questions (worth a total of 100 points). The types of questions are given at the end of this document and in the Questions folder under this assigmment. NOTES: The specific gavity of 30%HClcan be assmed to vary with tenperature according to the folloning equation: Sp.G.(HCl)=1.1616.042104[C)]2.2107[T(C)]2 The viscosity of 30%HCl can be found using the viscosity nomograph with X=13.0 and Y=16.6. Information about Nomographs can be found in the "Reference Material" Moctule on Canvas
