The purpose of this assignment is to allow students to develop communication skills, retrieve information from the real world that is relevant to course material, and critically think about and apply sociological perspectives and concepts to current events happening in society.
For each Sociology in the News assignment, a paper on race and ethnicity
- a brief summary of the news article
- which of the three major sociological perspectives (not theories from the chapter) the student feel applies to the news article and why
- an application of the sociological imagination to the issue raised in the news article (i.e., using the sociological imagination, discuss how the topic of your news article affects people at both the micro and macro level and the connection between the two
