For this assignment you will conduct 2 interviews with sales professionals. One interviewee should be involved in consumer sales, where you have prolonged contact with customers (not just checkout at a retail store). The other interview should be with a sales professional involved in business-to-business selling.
Ask the person in advance if they can spare 20 minutes for an interview for a college sales class assignment, and when is a convenient time to speak with them. Be prepared with your questions already written, and something to write with (notebook or laptop).
Categories for questions:
1. Description of their career in sales - how long in the industry, previous education or experience, their career path, what they view as a next step.
2. Description of a typical sales encounter - where, with whom, do they find the customer or does the customer come to them?
3. Likes and dislikes of the job, including pay, hours, working conditions, perks.
4. How they learn about products/services they sell, and how they learn about customers
5. Any advice they have for someone going into sales in their industry.
The final paper will have this format:
1. Information from Interview 1
2. Information from Interview 2
3. Your impressions of these two sales careers and conclusions
4. Names, titles, and company for each interviewee
Papers should be typed using 10 pt Ariel font, single-spaced, with double spacing between paragraphs.
